Michael Crilly wins 'Best Young Dentist 2019' at the Dentistry Awards

Michael Crilly, Associate Dentist at Blueapple Dental Care in Belcoo, Fermanagh has capped a big year by becoming the Best Young Dentist at the Dentistry Awards 2019

We caught up with Michael after his big win to find out more about his career and what he plans to do next at Bupa Dental Care.

Tell us about your career journey and where it started

After graduating from Queen’s University of Belfast in 2009, I was one of four people selected to do a two-year foundation training course in Northern Ireland, encompassing time in hospitals, practices and the community. Following this I took a position as Senior House Officer in oral surgery and paediatrics in Edinburgh for a year. The following year I worked in the restorative department where I fell in love with restorative dentistry.

In 2017 I decided that I would do the Advanced Dental Seminars Year Course run by Chris Orr and a focus photography course to learn about how to document and showcase my dental work. This completely changed my outlook on dentistry and re-energised me to push myself and where I wanted to take my career.

I looked for a private dentistry position at home in Northern Ireland, joining Blueapple Dental Care in Fermanagh in July 2018.

Tell us more about your role at Bupa

I’ve been with Blueapple Dental Care for just over a year. We provide a high standard of private general and cosmetic dentistry. I am a restorative dentist with a special interest in implants, helping my patients achieve the smile they want through minimally invasive procedures such as implants and veneers.

I have a keen interest in dental photography and use it daily to educate my patients, communicate with laboratories and promote the high standard of my work. This helps to engage patients in their treatment journey and I’ve also started an Instagram account @crillydental to help allow patients get further information about treatments

How did you feel when you found out you’d won?

I was shocked and really chuffed! It’s been a big year for me personally; my wife and I welcomed our daughter into the world and I’ve done some of the best dentistry of my career, so the award is the cherry on top. It’s a really proud moment for my whole family and, as a local Enniskillen boy, it feels great to bring this award home to Blueapple.

How did you celebrate?

My wife and I are taking our 6-month-old on her first trip to the cinema to watch Frozen 2!

Winner!

What’s next for you?

I really want to keep progressing. I’m going to be doing further implant training at Blueapple to give me more confidence in my surgical skills. I’d also love to do more teaching and mentor young dentists in the Bupa network after they’ve completed their foundation training.

I want to see our fantastic Blueapple practice go from strength to strength. I commute 180 miles per day, 3 days a week, to work here, and the reason I work this far away is that the practice enables me to provide the highest standard of dentistry using the best equipment and materials. Awards are fantastic but providing high-quality care on a daily basis is what matters to our patients and I’m really excited about what’s ahead.

What advice do you have for younger dentists?

It’s important to ask for help from people around you. Build a network of other dentists who can provide guidance and support. Finally, make sure you’re working to live, not living to work. Dentistry can be all encompassing and stressful at times, but it’s good to get a break from it – for me that’s my family. Give yourself a pat on the back once in a while and recognise your achievements.
