Working at Smiles Dental in Ireland

We've been catching up with Eavan, an Associate Dentist based at Smiles practice in Bray in the Republic of Ireland. Eavan has been sharing her career journey so far, along with the best words of advice for aspiring dentists.

What initially sparked your interest in a career in dentistry?

I genuinely feel that dentistry is a great career option for work/home balance. I really enjoy the hours I work and it was the right fit for me as I always wanted a family.

I have two children, Sophie and Chloe who are 13 and 15 and I can participate so much in their day-to-day life (pre-Covid anyway!) and still enjoy a full working week.

I studied at Trinity College and I suppose I was lucky in the sense that dentistry was always my first option.

Describe your career journey so far, and what has been your favourite thing about working as a dentist?

I obtained a job in the HSE straight after I graduated and I worked there for 7 years with Special Needs Patients and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I then progressed to a job with Smiles in Wexford and then eventually to Bray, where I’ve been for the last 10 years!

I absolutely love working with my patients to restore their confidence. I love the creative side of dentistry and I adore being part of a team – I love the camaraderie and the craic and I really feel we have a special little team in Bray.

“I advise you to try and work somewhere local – it really helps to build a patient base – word of mouth is my best referral. I would also advise working for a large company like Bupa as the career progression opportunities are amazing and as I mentioned the support is fabulous.”

What attracted you to working at Smiles Dental?

Obviously being from Bray and the proximity to my home was the biggest draw for me – it suits me infinitely and I love encouraging all my friends to become my patients!

The main draw to working with Smiles, which is part of Bupa was the support – it’s so nice to have a big team behind you and endless advice, support and encouragement.

What advice or words of encouragement would you give to other aspiring dentists?

I advise you to try and work somewhere local – it really helps to build a patient base – word of mouth is my best referral. I would also advise working for a large company like Bupa as the career progression opportunities are amazing and as I mentioned the support is fabulous.

I always have another specialist or colleague that I can bounce ideas off and we can collaborate so easily.
