One year on at Bupa Dental Care

Jayne, Practice Manager at our Sheffield Dental Centre has been sharing the experience of her first year with us at Bupa Dental Care.

What initially attracted you to work at Bupa Dental Care?

I had worked in retail for the past 30+ years in various roles from the store manager, moving up to Regional manager. I felt that the skills I had developed over the years such as strategic planning, time management, and people development, weren’t being used effectively.

Dental was an area that I was especially interested in, and so I decided to pursue a career as a Practice Manager so that I could learn as much about the clinical world whilst in this role.

What kind of support is available for you as a Practice Manager?

The support that I have had throughout my journey from joining Bupa Dental Care has been amazing. My two-week induction with a buddy Practice Manager was a great start, and then the Practice Manager Induction in Bristol played a vital part in my learning of the business.

Following this, I was invited to various team sessions, which were tailored to my development needs and expectations. My full induction process where I had regular reviews with my Area Manager were and still are very valuable, and an opportunity for me to highlight any areas in which I’d like further training. Even one year on I am still given opportunities to grow within the business on any other specialist role which I can support on.

“I would say make that leap! You will be surprised how transferable your skills are from one business to Bupa Dental Care, and I can assure you that you’ll be rewarded and supported on every step of your new journey.”

How did your role change as a result of Covid-19, and have there been any positives you’ve taken from this experience?

I am a very optimistic individual and try and see the positives in every situation. I am also the area trainer for behavior development and how we handle situations.

I would say the most challenging area actually turned into the most rewarding, as I used this time to develop my knowledge and increase my awareness of the COVID procedures so that I could ensure my team was well led and communicated to in a timely manner.

What advice or words of encouragement would you give someone thinking of following a career in dentistry at Bupa Dental Care?

I would say make that leap! You will be surprised how transferable your skills are from one business to Bupa Dental Care, and I can assure you that you’ll be rewarded and supported at every step of your new journey.
