Stevie Potter, Dentist, Entrepreneur and top Triathlete

Champion triathlete and part-time dentist, Stevie Potter is celebrating her top 10 finish at the 2021 European Sprint Distance Triathlon Championships in Valencia.

Stevie Potter is not just one of the UK’s top triathletes, she also finds time outside of her intensive training schedule to work as a part-time dentist here at Bupa Dental Care Taunton, and prior to this launched her own business, The Wonder Clinic, empowering people to look, feel and perform like the leaders the world needs them to be.

Speaking of her success in Valencia, Stevie said: “I’m delighted with my achievement at the European Sprint Distance Triathlon Championships. I started running and rowing when I was at University in Newcastle, and I soon discovered that triathlons were my sport. For me, the training and participating in competitions like these really help with my own well-being and it also helps me to get ahead in my career as a dentist.”

Stevie continues: “I couldn’t have achieved what I have as a triathlete and in my career as a dentist, without the support of my work family at Bupa. We have faced extremely difficult times during the pandemic, however, for me, it was also positive as I fell back in love with dentistry. For the first time, I feel I’ve managed to achieve a perfect work-life balance, and this is wholly due to the understanding and flexibility of my practice manager, and the support of my colleagues.

“They have given me the flexibility and support that has enabled me to follow my dreams as a triathlete, to continue and thrive in my career as a dentist, and to launch my new business.”

Hannah Nicholls, Practice Manager at Bupa Dental Care Taunton, said: “At Bupa Dental Care, we really believe in our people’s happiness and well-being. We feel that supporting our team and being as flexible as we can, makes for a happy workforce. Stevie is managing to juggle her career, training and competing in triathlons, and running her own business. She really is incredible, and she is a testament that, if you put your mind to it, anything is possible. We are all so proud of her and her achievements in Valencia.”

Following her European success, Stevie has also qualified for the World Triathlon Sprint Championships, the highest level possible for an amateur athlete. The Championships will be held next year in Montreal.

Stevie's top tips for achieving your career goals and more

Find balance

It’s important to have dedicated time for each of your pursuits and that includes making time for family as well as down time for yourself.

Build a support network

Make sure everyone around you knows what you’re up to. You’ll be surprised at how understanding and accommodating they’ll be and how much easier things become when you have a good support network around you.

Dream big

Don’t let your goals be dictated by what others think is possible. If you only ever work inside your own limitations, you’ll never reach your true potential.

Have a plan

Put as much effort into planning as you do into achieving.  If you don’t plan, you won’t achieve. My day is planned to the hour, to make sure I have a full idea of everything I need to do, and when I need to delegate or say no to things.

Prioritise

There’s no such thing as ‘I don’t have time’ only ‘I have different priorities.’ Make your primary goal your priority and understand the sacrifices you might have to make along the way to get there.
