Mental Health First Aider training

Across Bupa, we offer a range of mental health resources, and we’ve been talking to George, HR Delivery Partner here at Bupa Dental Care about his experience of the Mental Health First Aider Course.

What interested you in the First aider training?

I decided to become a Mental Health First Aider as someone who has had very close dealings with friends that have struggled with their mental health in the past, particularly at a time when there wasn’t the awareness or support available as we have now.

Therefore, I felt the opportunity to become a MHFA was a step I could take to help create a positive work environment, where support and discussions around mental health & wellbeing are encouraged.

Tell us a little bit about this training and what you learnt.

This training was run over two days and we went through a range of topics such as the different types of mental health conditions people have and the severity of them, as well as how to spot individuals struggling with their mental health and how to approach and support them.

“The course really opened my eyes as to how I can look after my own mental health, as well as support others. A big part of looking after our mental health is ensuring we maintain a good work/life balance and keep stress levels low.”

What have you taken away from this experience?

One thing I gained from the course was that it is clear the vast majority of people will likely have some form of mental health struggles in their life, whether that’s dealing with their own or supporting someone close to them.

More specifically, research shows that those working within dentistry lead to some of the highest levels of mental health conditions in the workplace, and therefore I think everyone can do their bit to be more understanding and aware of the pressures we all face in life.

The course really opened my eyes as to how I can look after my own mental health, as well as support others. A big part of looking after our mental health is ensuring we maintain a good work/life balance and keep stress levels low. I know what my coping mechanisms are for dealing with my mental health and when to take a step back when my stress levels get too high.
